United Nations Forms Agency to Protect Intellectual Property World Wide

By admin | January 23, 2010

The World Intellectual Property Organization was formed by the United Nations to protect Intellectual Property throughout the world.  For those not familiar with the term “Intellectual Property”, it refers to anything that is a creation of the mind.  In plain language, an idea.  This could be an invention, a play, a painting, or a trademark.  The mission of the WIPO is to safeguard the public interest while providing accessibility to international Intellectual Property.  In most cases, innovations are protected by patents.  A patent grants exclusive rights to the person or persons who are responsible for the creation of the innovation.  It is good for a period of twenty years.  During this time no one can manufacture, sell, distribute, or use the patented product or process without the permission of the owner.
