Teeth Whitening Can Cause Hypersensitivity

By admin | May 31, 2009

In children under age 16, tooth whitening procedures such as tray based and in-office whitening procedures are not recommended. At ages younger than 16, many times the nerves are enlarged and the teeth are still growing. The risk is that teeth whitening can cause heightened sensitivity, and we don’t yet know if it is a long term effect or temporary. However, whitening toothpastes with the seal of the American Dental Association are considered safe for children. They may only whiten by one or two shades, but often at such young ages, teeth have not yet become very stained, so this might be sufficient.
