What Is Online File Storage?

By admin | March 30, 2010

Online file storage – also known as file hosting and cyberlocker – refers to saving and storing files on a server, instead of on individual machines, and accessing them via web or FTP. Many companies offer this service, which can be optimized for serving many users or single-user storage. It can be used for serving software, personal backup, file access or file distribution, or for distributing cached or static content. There are many ways that providers offer this service. Customers are usually charged on a per-gigabyte basis for this service, although there are some providers who charge a bandwidth cost as well. It can also be obtained as a monthly or yearly subscription, with limits on either file size or storage space. Some providers may require customers to download software to access their files, while others allow access using any web browser.
